Located in central Java, Candi Borobudur (Borobudur Temple) is the largest Buddhist Temple in the world. Built in the 9th century, it has nine stacked platforms, six square (lower) and three circular (upper), topped with a central dome. The lower platforms are decorated with more than 2,600 large stone relief panels depicting the life of Buddha, and, originally, approximately 500 Buddha statues. Surrounding the upper dome on the three circular platforms are 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa (Buddhist reliquary). One stupa has been opened to expose the Buddha statue (marker 5:57).
