09:13 Now you play here at the Taubertal Festival,
09:15 which is quite away from Utrecht.
09:18 Did a dream come true for you
09:20 that you now really travel around
09:22 with your music and with your band?
09:24 Yeah, that's the best thing ever.
09:26 And we so much like playing festivals
09:28 in other countries,
09:30 and also playing in Germany
09:32 will always bring us a good feeling, you know.
09:35 We've traveled a long, long way today,
09:37 but when you're on stage in the next five minutes,
09:39 just everything is gonna collapse,
09:41 and it's a great feeling.
09:43 And tomorrow we will fly to the UK,
09:45 and we're gonna play a big festival in Leicester.
09:48 It's the best thing what we like.
09:50 We enjoy it pretty much.
09:52 And how do you like the surrounding here,
09:54 the area? Rothenburg is like an old, ancient town.
09:57 Have you seen anything of it,
09:59 and what was your first impression?
10:01 Yeah, well, we've seen a lot of the castles
10:03 and the historical buildings,
10:05 and it was really nice.
10:07 We haven't got that much historical buildings
10:09 in the Netherlands, and it was nice
10:11 to travel between the mountains
10:13 and just see where we're going to this time.
10:15 And, well, it was a big surprise,
10:17 and we really enjoyed this festival.
10:19 And the Tauber, it's a nice river, you know.
10:23 And if it would be a little bit warmer,
10:25 we all could jump in,

13:38 Over 16,000 people are in the narrow Traubertal in the last three days
13:42 That's a lot of people
13:44 And to make it work smoothly, this man is responsible
13:48 Mayor of Rothenburg, police officer
13:51 And you coordinate the security, Kurt Förster, your name
13:56 And now tell me, how do you get it organized every year
13:59 that it's going on peacefully?
14:01 Yes, that's the experience of the years
14:03 The experience that we've gotten better every year
14:05 It certainly wasn't like that in the beginning of the first year
14:08 Only every year the standard is improved
14:10 And we also learn from mistakes that were certainly made
14:13 And now, today, it's in a state that you can say it's going on
14:16 Everyone knows what to do
14:18 And the different organizations work just as well together
14:22 Whether it's police, fire brigade or THW
14:24 Also the professional security, then the organizers
14:28 So it's a team effort
14:30 And that's what makes the flair
14:33 It's very friendly, it's rare, hardly anything violent happens
14:38 And it's also a quiet festival, I would say
14:41 How did you experience it as mayor or as mayor at that time
14:44 The acceptance, also now in the population
14:47 Was that connected to skepticism at the beginning?
14:50 I came to the city council in 1990 and that's when the open air came about
14:54 We also had critical voices in Rothenburg
14:58 My colleagues and I took the initiative
15:02 Because we thought it was important and right to do something for the youth
15:06 We are a tourist-oriented city, a historical city
15:10 Where mostly only the middle ages live
15:13 And that was important for me as a counterpoint
15:16 Because I also saw it with my own children
15:19 That they went all over Bavaria and everywhere to visit festivals
15:23 And when you have something like that in front of the door
15:25 That's also very important for the parents
15:28 [Applause]
15:56 So, a dream came true
15:58 "Totenkopf" by Ole from Fire in the Attic
16:02 On naked skin
16:04 Now I have to know from you first
16:06 Are you a fan or just because you are here?
16:08 Fan, fan, of course, what else?
16:11 You like to hear that, right?
16:13 Yes, of course, if I like to sign somewhere, then on decolletage
16:17 How often has it happened?
16:19 We did it at the Rheinkultur in the autogram class
16:22 We were allowed to do something like that, but actually it is very rare
16:25 At Rheinkultur you have a home game, because you are from Bonn
16:28 Taubertal Festival in Bavaria, how was the audience today?
16:32 Great, we had a lot of fun
16:36 Of course, a home game is something else
16:39 We were still relatively early today, but it was still great fun
16:43 The people listened well, even until the end
16:46 That's a good sign
16:48 When you first drove into the festival grounds and into the Taubertal
16:52 What was your first impression?
16:54 Taubertal is a very narrow access road
16:57 We drove around for a long time until we were in here with our little bus
17:01 I found it very interesting, I would have liked to see how the other bands did it with the much larger buses
17:06 Because it is a valley, there is only one access road
17:09 It's narrow, but it's nice, if you look in, it's great
17:14 You have already played a few festivals here
17:16 What would you say is the difference between this festival and others?
17:20 I have not seen a festival where the surroundings are so beautiful
17:25 It's very dreamy with these hanging buildings and the fact that people can still stand up there
17:29 Even the rain has stopped, so everything is fine
17:33 Fire in the Attic at the Taubertal Festival 2006
17:37 No, you are not in the wrong movie
17:46 You are still at the WDR Rockpalast
17:49 We are in Rothenburg at the Taubertal Festival
17:52 In one shop here, the whole thing is celebrated at Christmas
17:55 There are Christmas items here
17:57 This is the head of the house, Mr. Wohlfahrt from Käthe Wohlfahrt
18:00 For 25 years they have a shop here in Rothenburg
18:03 Where you get an incredible amount of Christmas stuff
18:06 Is that a market gap?
18:09 Now certainly not anymore, but back then it was a market gap
18:12 Now we have a market gap with 25 years of Christmas
18:15 German Christmas tradition that we have lived up to
18:18 You see, also in summer with a lot of success
18:21 It's a great thing
18:23 Now there is a rock festival in Rothenburg once a year
18:26 What do you get from it?
18:28 Do festival visitors come up here and buy some Christmas balls?
18:31 Yes, but my three children are also down in the Taubertal and celebrate
18:35 Now on the weekend, unfortunately a little cold
18:38 But they said there are also many festival visitors coming up here
18:41 To warm up and watch
18:43 Ladies and gentlemen, the Fun Loving Criminals
18:45 One of the most relaxed bands I know from New York
18:48 I must admit, I'm a fan
18:50 I have to admit, I'm a fan of the Fun Loving Criminals
18:52 And I'm not saying that to every band
18:54 So how was it for you today playing here at the Taubertal?
18:57 This is really cool, because we played in Germany
18:59 I guess, what, 10 years ago with Garbage
19:01 I said it today
19:02 And every time we play, it's kind of like
19:04 Obviously we don't play like stuffed people here every day
19:06 We're like a different kind of band
19:08 So when we play something like that with all those people there
19:11 And they don't throw stuff and they clap
19:13 For us that's like...
19:14 We do afternoon shows too, we usually play at night
19:17 So for a band to play in the afternoon, most bands hate it
19:19 We rarely do it, so when we do it, it's always good times
19:22 What time is it now? It's not even 9 o'clock
19:24 Unless if there's a midge infestation
19:27 We're not big fans of that though
19:28 We got attacked by a bunch of bugs
19:30 But do you know that Germany literally like
19:32 New York State, when you go up to New York State
19:34 And you go out into Catskills and stuff like that
19:36 Because billions and billions of years ago
19:38 It was like all the continents were connected
19:41 And they're all in the same latitude
19:43 So if you go out, there are not as many midges
19:45 Because at Flair 4, like New York, they don't have midges
19:48 You go to Florida...
19:50 Mosquitoes, light bugs, light bugs
19:52 Those are...
19:54 They don't bite
19:55 Right now it's about mosquitos
19:57 Which mosquitos are worse
19:59 We are really here now in the nature
20:01 What was your first impression when you arrived here?
20:04 The guy who did this is stupid
20:06 He should have grown pot all along that field right there
20:08 We got lucky, actually a couple of people
20:10 Promoters and stuff and stage managers
20:12 We've known for years
20:13 So that's the best thing, going from country to country
20:16 Knowing you're going to see people you recognize
20:18 And you create alliances
20:21 It's ten years now
20:22 So whenever we come to Germany
20:24 It's usually the same PA system
20:26 So it's the same guy from the PA system
20:28 So you know him
20:29 Or it's the same front of house system
20:31 So the promoter guy, we've been working with him
20:33 Since the beginning, so we see him

28:10 We are in the State Treasury under the old Rathaus of Rothenburg.
28:14 And here is the "Verlies".
28:17 And the whole thing is a bit bitter, of course.
28:19 People were really tortured here, no question.
28:22 And you could come to the association that Thomas von Schandmaul feels comfortable here.
28:26 But of course it isn't.
28:28 This cliché with this medieval music, it doesn't actually serve only, does it?
28:32 Not only, I would say.
28:34 Of course, a whole piece of our medieval stories that we have.
28:38 Through the sound colors of medieval instruments that we use.
28:41 Through dremel, through bagpipes.
28:44 But not only. We do folk rock.
28:46 We don't use melodies that get dusty in some libraries.
28:49 But we write everything ourselves.
28:52 So I would say, medieval music is a small part, a facet of us.
28:56 And now, such torture instruments here, do they inspire you for new songs, for ideas?
29:01 I think people were hung up on this and then really stretched.
29:04 So it looks bitter.
29:06 Are you interested in such things?
29:08 Yes, it is interesting in every way.
29:11 I mean, history in general is interesting and frightening.
29:15 Could be a text.
29:17 Let's come up with something.
29:19 We won't hear that at the Taubertal Festival tonight, of course.
29:22 But you play here for the third time.
29:24 What memories do you associate with this festival?
29:27 It is an open festival.
29:29 The audience, the bands are represented in different styles.
29:33 The audience is made up of different types of people,
29:36 the sleigh-bearer next to the metalhead.
29:38 It's fun.
29:41 People have fun together, they dance together.
29:45 There is no limit.
29:47 And that's what makes the Taubertal Festival so interesting,
29:49 that you like to come here again and again.
29:51 You are from Bavaria.
29:53 Now the Taubertal is in Franconia, which is of course also part of Bavaria.
29:56 Is the audience different here than at other festivals?
29:59 I think you can make it regional.
30:03 One listens more, is a little quieter.
30:06 The other goes more to the party bell.
30:08 But I don't know if I can do that here.
30:10 What about Frank?
30:11 He can party, definitely.
30:13 It will be fun today.

30:22 That people are here primarily for the party
30:25 and maybe don't necessarily listen.
30:27 Is that negative?
30:29 No, I mean, listening to music is best at home.
30:33 In front of the CD player with a glass of wine.
30:36 Of course you go to a live concert to party.
30:38 And that then swaps back from the audience and is just as fun.
