00:00 29 days till the start of the Tour de France. I assume you're still doing the Tour de France,
00:06 or you still want to. Tell me how those... I mean, the last week you're not going to
00:11 do a whole lot, so you've got three weeks, I guess, of intense training. What needs to
00:17 happen in those three weeks? Break them down for me, those three weeks. What are you going
00:21 to... what do you need to do?
00:24 Well, yeah, I mean, I've been training quite good until now. Home trainer, running, and
00:34 start now this week on the road. So, yeah, the shape is not so bad as I thought it's
00:40 going to be after the rollers. Also, the wrist is getting better every day. And yeah, now
00:48 this week I'm in Sierra Nevada for altitude camp. I try to get as much as possible out
00:56 of this camp. Here I have great support from the team, and yeah, we can do big hours on
01:04 the bike and having a massage and physiotherapy here. So, yeah, it's a lot of work. But yeah,
01:14 then in 11 June, I go off Sierra Nevada to do recon, a few stages for the tour, and then
01:25 back on Sestriere training camp. And then, yeah, hopefully I will do national championships,
01:35 TT and world race.
01:37 And no Tour of Slovenia?
01:41 No, I don't think so. I think it's, yeah, unfortunately, yeah, I lost some training.
01:50 I mean, lost some training. I couldn't do much on the road in the last four weeks. So,
02:00 yeah, I need to focus a little bit more on the intervals and long trainings outside.
02:07 I'm just curious with the injury in the wrist, have you been feeling that at all when you're
02:12 back on the road bike now, when you're braking or steering or descending? Is that going to
02:16 be a factor, do you think, during the tour?
02:18 Well, now, yeah, the first couple of days when I try to go on the road, I mean, first
02:26 of all, I shouldn't go on the road until six weeks. So, yeah, I'm a bit stupid and disobey
02:34 doctor's orders, but I push the team, I push everybody and try to go on the bike. But,
02:40 yeah, I know, I knew that I cannot put too much pressure on the scapula, on the hand.
02:49 And, yeah, I was really careful the first few days. Just, yeah, I did rollers, go out
02:54 on the road just to two, three hours. Obviously, I'm riding with a cast, a plastic cast.
03:03 That I can take off and on. And now I have a few different casts, one for normal life,
03:13 one for bike. And then when I'm already almost at the end, just a little bit more support
03:20 around the wrist. But, yeah, I'm taking care every day with my, yeah, my right arm is getting
03:31 more strong because it takes more balance on the right hand. But, yeah, luckily, because we have
03:40 osteopath here, physio, I get every day better without any pain and in my body and the wrist
03:51 is getting every day better. I have more and more mobility. And I think that, yeah, after
03:59 next week when we see the scan, if I didn't damage the bone again, but I don't think I did
04:05 because I have no pain, we will see if we can, yeah, start to putting more pressure on the hand.
04:15 And, yeah, I think for the tour, maybe I will still need some soft brace around the wrist
04:23 just for a bit of support. And, yeah, I hope that I get more or less mobility to go out of
04:33 the saddle and sprinting until the, before the tour. - And Liege, this is really kind of like
04:41 your first setback in your career, which is kind of crazy to think about. How are you handling
04:48 the downtime and recovery and how are the emotions, how is your mental health,
04:54 how do you feel going forward? - Yeah, I feel really good. I mean, the first week
05:02 after Liege, I had off anyway. So, yeah, basically I was just relaxing, try to relax at home.
05:16 And then, yeah, second week I already started some home trainer and, yeah, motivation was really
05:23 high since the beginning. And I did really a lot of physiotherapy the last five weeks. And,
05:36 yeah, I think, yeah, we will see how the CT scan shows on next Monday if it's healed properly
05:48 and the bone. But, yeah, otherwise I'm really looking forward for the next week of training
05:56 and to go to the tour. - Just a quick question. You are always a guy who's having fun in racing.
06:05 But how much fun could a Tour de France be if you're perhaps not 100% in top condition?
06:14 - Yeah, if you're not 100% at the Tour, if you go like me to go in Tour for the win, I don't think
06:26 you can enjoy. But I think, yeah, hopefully I will be 100%. Maybe the wrist will not be at 100%,
06:38 but I think the legs can be because, yeah, you don't need wrist to train the legs. So,
06:48 yeah, I think, yeah, we will see that when the Tour goes. But I think I will enjoy it in any case.
06:58 - So my question is, are you concerned going to the Tour without races? Or can you say that
07:05 maybe you have a setback? It's blessing in disguise because we saw that Yermo Bismarck
07:12 at the Giro, they had so many problems in the team and then Primoz won the race. So that's my question.
07:20 - Yeah, sometimes setbacks can be even good, especially in our big seasons.
07:30 And, yeah, at least you take some time off, rest the body and the mind. So,
07:40 yeah, sometimes it can be good. And luckily, it's not a huge setback. It's just the hand.
07:46 It's nothing with the legs or head or something like this. So I could train almost not normally,
07:55 but I could do some great hours. So, yeah, I think I would not call it a real setback, but
08:06 just an unlucky situation. But I think I can pull out of this a lot.
08:14 - But are you concerned going to the Tour without races? Because I think normally you start the
08:22 season even without races, you're normally on a very good level.
08:27 - Yeah, normally I really like to have a race before an important race.
08:36 But, okay, the Grand Tour is 21 stages and sometimes it's good to be a little bit more fresh.
08:43 And, yeah, I will do national championships, so two days of racing. And, yeah, you can always
08:52 do some good trainings behind moto and stuff like this to simulate as it's a race.
09:03 And I think, yeah, you can adapt trainings that is similar to races. So, yeah, I'm not so worried
09:14 this year. - How hard are these first two stages of the Tour de France? Have you had a peek at
09:20 those? I mean, because this is going to start off very aggressive into Bilbao and then, of course,
09:25 into San Sebastian. - Yeah, the first two stages are really, really beautiful ones. Super hard.
09:33 And, yeah, I think it's good. I think I prefer it like this than having flight stages the first
09:40 week because you already see who is there and who is what, who got the jersey. And
09:52 it's not so stressful the next days. So, yeah, it's going to be tough to come there fresh and
10:01 immediately going full gas the first two days. But, yeah, two years ago was more or less similar.
10:10 The first two stages were super hard finish. So, and, yeah, I felt good back then. So,
10:17 I think this type of the Tour I really like. - And what's your, you know, a lot of us would
10:24 love to see Remco, Rolic at the Tour de France as well. The fans would love to see that.
10:30 What's your take on those guys, you know, not racing the Tour and how much would you like or
10:37 wouldn't like to see those guys at the Tour? And also, what do you have to say about Primoz
10:43 winning the Giro d'Italia? Were you watching that? - Yeah, I think first, yeah, Remco,
10:51 he abandoned Giro, which he could go battle for the win. And he's the world champion. So,
10:59 if I'm him, I would do the Tour de France as well. But, yeah, everybody is different and
11:05 everybody feels different on the bike after such a hard racing. Also, he had COVID. So,
11:13 I don't know. I would love to see him at the Tour. It would be even bigger competition. And
11:21 same goes for Roglic. But I think, yeah, Jumbo have a clear leader with Jonas now for the Tour
11:29 and Roglic won Giro. So, for them, it's a perfect situation, I would say. And maybe, yeah, they
11:39 don't want to push Primoz too hard and save him for Vuelta or I don't know. - Yeah, it's better
11:47 for you. Last year, they ganged up on you there on that stage 11. - Yeah, exactly.
