A kitten was rescued from the chassis of a truck after the driver "heard meowing" while stationary at a stop sign.

The stricken feline was heard whining while the vehicle was stuck in traffic after somehow managing to get its head stuck in a hole in the chassis.

The shocked driver was travelling in between Carlsbad and Escondido in California, USA at the time.

After making their way home, the driver called the San Diego Humane Society and volunteers came to try and safely remove it.

The black and white kitten had its whole head and jaw stuck in the opening.

It had to be sedated and cotton buds were used to dislodge it.

Footage shows the rescue operation where one humane officer laid underneath the vehicle to safely remove the petrified-looking creature.

Once rescued, it was taken to the humane society's campus for treatment.

San Diego Humane Society said in a statement: "Our Humane Law Enforcement received a call from the truck’s driver on Monday afternoon.

"The driver said he heard meowing at a stop sign while on the road between Carlsbad and Escondido.

"When he came home, he was able to identify where sound was coming from — there was a black and white kitten with her jaw stuck tightly in a hole of the frame of the vehicle.

"Our veterinary team deployed to meet our Humane Officers in the field near SR-78 and Centre City Parkway in Escondido.

"They sedated the kitten, and worked with Q-tips to patiently dislodge her head.

"Luckily, they were able to free the kitten so she could be taken to our Escondido Campus for care.

"She received pain medication, fluids, antibiotics, warming and a good meal.

"We are so pleased that this kitten came out safe and sound. Remarkably, she is doing very well!

"She’s currently serving her legal 3-day stray hold at San Diego Humane Society."

The footage was captured on May 8.
