The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), formerly known as the Texas Department of Corrections, is the state agency responsible for the management and oversight of the prison system in Texas. The TDCJ operates 104 prisons and other correctional facilities across the state and houses more than 140,000 inmates. The agency's mission is to provide public safety, promote positive change in offender behavior, reintegrate offenders into society, and assist victims of crime. The TDCJ is also responsible for managing probation and parole programs, providing educational and vocational training to inmates, and ensuring that offenders receive appropriate medical and mental health care.
