In der Serengeti in Tansania sind die Raubkatzen die Könige. Die Savanne ist ihr Reich und sie finden Nahrung im Überfluss. Doch auch sie sind nicht frei von Gefahren. Die Disney-Naturdokumentation erzählt anhand von realen Aufnahmen die Geschichte mehrerer Tierfamilien: Die junge Mutter Layla und ihre Tochter Mara sind in ihrer Löwenfamilie gut aufgehoben - bis Layla sich bei einem Jagdunfall verletzt und sie hinter dem Rudel zurückfallen. Derweil sammelt Löwenpatriarch Kali, der mächtige Herr eines Rudels, seine Söhne um sich und will eine ganze Dynastie begründen. Es droht eine Konfrontation zwischen Kali und Layla. Die Geparden-Mutter Sita wiederum versucht ihre fünf Jungen durchs Leben zu bringen.
