Teachers' wages: How do salaries for educators compare across Europe?

Teachers across Europe have gone on strike in the past year for better pay and working conditions. We look at the differences in salaries.

Thousands of teachers in Portugal protested in Lisbon on the 14th of January after several days of partial strikes.

Teachers in England and Wales announced on the 16th of January that they have voted to take strike action

But how do teacher salaries compare across Europe?

The country with the highest annual gross starting salaries in public schools, a lower secondary, was Luxembourg,

earning over €69,000 per year, almost three times that of the EU average,

and over 16 times that of Albania who sit at the bottom of the chart with an annual €4,233.

The UK, placed above the EU average, with over €29,000 per year, earning an extra €4,033.

The five highest earners were Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark and Iceland.

The countries that earned the least were Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.
