00:00As the new school year begins, how is the teacher shortage in the EU impacting the quality of education?
00:10Children across the EU are returning to school en masse.
00:14However, schools in several member states report a lack of teachers to fill their schedules.
00:19France faced a shortage of at least one teacher in more than half of public schools,
00:24with three-quarters of middle and high schools reporting an incomplete team.
00:28In Portugal, over 3,000 classes do not have a complete schedule,
00:33with English, Portuguese and geography classes being the most affected.
00:38Meanwhile, in Belgium's French-speaking schools, the problem is most persistent in secondary schools,
00:44where up to a quarter of necessary teachers is lacking.
00:47UNESCO assessed that more than 90% of the estimated teacher shortage in Europe and North America
00:53is due to teachers leaving the profession.
00:55Teacher shortages are costly, impact workloads and may deter future generations from joining the profession,
01:02which can create a cycle of low-quality education, perpetuating educational inequalities.
01:08The lack of professionals also has a toll on how much time children spend in class.
01:13On average, the total number of recommended hours in full-time compulsory general education is 7,868.
01:21However, the total was below average in 22 education systems for the year 2024-2025.
