Top 10 Classic Dalek Exterminations

As it says on the tin, the 10 best exterminations from the Daleks featured in Doctor Who (from '63 - '89).

These are rated according to how good the visual and audio effects for the extermination were, how dramatic they are story-wise, and just overall enjoyment.

10. The opening gag with the Daleks using a mini tardis to test their weapons on hilarious, but the brutality of killing the first two beings they then see purely to test their guns is a good reminder of how brutal they really are.

9. A formula that is repeated in various ways over the series - a humanoid helps the Daleks, thinking he can use them for his own gain. Of course, it only ends one way. Bonus points for the madness of Chen's breakdown, mixed with the still and calmness of the Daleks, only worried that they don't shoot the would-be ruler of the universe in a place that might harm them.

8. I think this is the first human we see killed by a Dalek on screen? His helplessness is quite terrifying, and the extermination effect and sound are interesting choices.

7. This is the first on-screen Dalek killing and is a good foreboding of their deviant nature. The thal leader steps up and tries to enact a peaceful alliance, only to be ambushed and shot. The way they loom in from the shadows, massively outnumbering their visitor gives off a very creepy feel.

6. A good mix of comedy and brutality on show, with Lesterson's deluded attempt to befriend the Dalek, and the Dalek's straightforward delivery of 'Yes, you gave us life', before ending its' creators.

5. A satisfying death story-wise, given what a prick Nyder was. Right up until he's shot Nyder is as calm as ever though and obeys Davros' order, right in front of the opposing Daleks. It's quite surprising in a way that given his slimy nature Nyder doesn't swap allegiance to the Daleks to try and save his own skin, but it's a choice that helps legitimize his character.

4. A change of heart from the enigmatically named 'Controller' sees him help the doctor, against the Daleks. He tries to argue his case but appears to know how this is going to go. His stoicism right up till the end is in fitting with the character.

3. Such a beloved character and one that I was rooting for to survive the Dalek's creation. His death is horrible, with him openly pleading for his life to Davros as others move away from him, knowing there is nothing they can do. The fact that the shots blind everyone in the room is a nice touch and really sells how horrible the extermination is. This isn't just a person being shot, this is a horrible and painful way to go. Ronson is also technically the 1st person to be killed by a Dalek, so a sort of weird honour in a way for him.

2. Incredible effect, sound, and impact. Additionally, the shot we see of the Dalek's point of view is fantastic, and one that would be aped somewhat in the new series going forward.

1. The creator ended with his own creation.
