In Paris , in 1941 , during the German occupation , Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil), a Jewish jeweller, entrusts his shop to his employee François Mercier (Gilles Lellouche), before attempting to reach the free zone. Unable to do so, Haffmann hides in the cellar. Mercier accepts this unforeseen situation on the condition that his boss accepts a somewhat special agreement.
