Philippines journalist Maria Ressa, who won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, learned of her win during a live forum broadcast on the Centre for Independent Journalism's Facebook page.

Maria said she was shocked and that it was a recognition of how hard it is being a journalist today.

She said this during a regional discussion on press freedom and the survival of independent journalism with speakers Arif Zulkifl from Tempo, Indonesia and Steven Gan from Malaysiakini.

Steven congratulated Maira on the award and said that it will inspire all journalists to continue their struggle.

Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov were given the award "for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia," Chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen of the Norwegian Nobel Committee told a news conference.
