"Natural disasters can be scary for both humans and their pets …. The better you can prepare, the more readily you can keep you and your pet safe." Erin Askeland, via Huffpost.
Here are seven expert-recommended ways to protect your pets during a disaster.
1. Have a plan : Research nearby emergency shelters and pet-friendly destinations so you know where to go if you have to evacuate.
2. Create an emergency bag : Fill an easy-to-carry bag with a pet first aid kit, enough food and water for a week, feeding dishes, medications and any other essentials.
3. Get your pets microchipped : If your pets gets lost without a collar and someone finds them, a shelter can scan their chip for identification.
4. Crate train your pets : An emergency situation probably means keeping your pets confined to a crate for long stretches of time.
5. Build a trusting bond : Being your pet’s safe person will help them cope better in a stressful situation.
6. Secure your pets at the first sign of danger : Disasters can be disorienting for pets and cause them to panic and run away.
7. Never leave your pets behind : If you have to evacuate, always take your pets with you.
