As your child enters the toddler years they will begin to pick up lots of new skills. For many kids this includes starting to write. You can prepare your toddler for writing by helping them build the coordination and fine motor skills they need for the task. Make sure they have the right tools to begin writing and make the process fun by incorporating writing into their regular play. Provide toys that build fine motor skills. Before your child can start writing they need to develop strength and coordination in their hands. Offer toys that require your toddler to use their hands and perform complex actions such as
Engage your child in hands on activities. Encourage your toddler to touch and interact with the world around them. Even if you dont have toys on hand you can give them tasks to do that will help them develop the fine motor skills they need to write. For example you might
Give your child utensils at meal times. It may be frustrating to watch your toddler struggling to use eating utensils but these are important skills that will help them master the level of coordination they need for writing. Offer a spoon fork or toddler friendly chopsticks every time they eat and gently encourage your toddler to use them.
Encourage your toddler to draw. Drawing is the foundation for writing. Give your child some finger paints a paintbrush or a crayon and let their creativity flow.
