This is a new edit of a classic Beefheart ’72 TV performance, created from recently released outtakes.

The original broadcast version of this clip, has always been a favorite music video of mine. Featuring as it does, Beefheart’s fearsome presence and powerful vocal, the awesome dance moves of Mark “Rockette Morton” Boston sliding around in his crazy suit and panama and Bill “Zoot Horn Rollo” Harkleroad and THAT riff. Harkeload’s riff is just so damn good, and the 3-guitarist interaction he leads, is something wondrous to behold; they truly were a magic band.

Thirty minutes of footage shot at the Beat-Club session was released in 2012 on The Lost Broadcasts DVD. The performances are in front of blue screen, unlike the original Boogalarize You broadcast, which has added anachronistic “psychedelic” video effects, typical of the era.
In recent years, the Beat-Club YouTube channel uploaded 4 separate outtake videos, which between them encompass the complete session, from several camera angles. I layered all of the clips together, and found that they added about 6 minutes to the DVD material, including camera angles that hadn’t circulated before. For me, this represented a rare and beautiful opportunity to re-edit one of my favorite music videos from scratch. So here is, what I hope is a more exciting – and special effects free - new edit of this incredible performance.
I couldn’t resist a little extra creativity; my edit starts with Beefheart introducing the band, and the addition of the great man’s own paintings and drawings of the corresponding band members, taken from The Spotlight Kid album sleeve and elsewhere.
And one more thing, I have changed the blue screen to a more becoming purple!
Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!
