The Justice Minister, Choo Mi-ae, suspended Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl from his post and also said she will seek disciplinary action against the top district attorney.
The unprecedented move, announced on Tuesday, comes amid the clash between the two which has been boiling over amid reforms in the country's prosecution office.
Explaining the decision, Minister Choo said there had been discoveries made relating to a number of questionable activities from Yoon including "improper" meeting with a media executive and interference with the prosecution's investigations to protect those around him.
The public is waiting to see if Yoon will immediately take legal action.
