Meanwhile, Watson has been waiting for Holmes to arrive, and when Holmes finally surrenders to Baker Street, he starts laughing. Watson is confused and asks what is so funny. Holmes then tells his story and comments that he thought the situation and position he was in at the wedding was fun. He also asks whether or not Watson is willing to participate in a plan to discover where the image is hidden in Adler's house. Watson agrees, and Holmes changes to another disguise as a clergyman. The duo leave Baker Street towards Adler's house.
When Holmes and Watson arrive, a group of unemployed men roam the street. When Adler's coach stops, Holmes implements his plan. A fight breaks out between the men on the street about who can help Adler. Holmes rushes to fight to protect Adler and is apparently beaten and wounded. Adler leads him to his living room, where Holmes gestures for him to open the window. When Holmes raises his hand, Watson recognizes a preset signal and throws it into a plumber's smoke rocket. As the smoke comes out of the building, Watson yells "FIRE!" and the scream is repeated in the street.
Holmes leaves Adler's house and tells Watson what he saw. As Holmes expected, Adler hastened to obtain her most prized possession with the cry of "fire": the photograph of her and the King. Holmes could see that the image stood in recess quickly gets lost in the crowd. The following morning, Holmes explains his findings to the King. When Holmes, Watson, and the King arrive at Adler's house at 8 a.m., their elderly maid sardonically informs them that she left the country on the 5.15 train from the Charing Cross train station. Holmes quickly goes to the hiding place of the photograph, finds a photo of Irene Adler in an evening gown and a letter dated midnight and addressed to him. In the letter, Adler tells Holmes that he did very well to find the photograph and wear it in his costumes.
