A teenager was found dead after being electrocuted by a broken extension cable she was holding while using her phone.

Lae Khonmay, 19, was laying on her bed with an electric fan and her smartphone plugged into the power point. She is believed to have been fiddling with the socket while using her phone.

The teenager's friend Phuwan Pimthong, 20, found her dead on Tuesday evening (May 26) at the home in Pathum Thani, central Thailand.

The white plastic casing around the extension point was broken. Phuwan, a waitress, said the lead had been broken for several months but Lae continued using it.

She said she immediately turned off the power at the mains and called the emergency services.

Police officers who examined the scene believe that Lae died after her fingers touched the exposed fittings and she was electrocuted.

Lae's devastated sister Pieo Phommasing, 32, said she had warned her sister several times already not to use the broken power outlet.

She said: "I've been telling her for a long time to stop using this power outlet or keep it away from the mattress because it's old and broken.

"However, she never listened to me and kept using it and unfortunately she was electrocuted.''

Pieo said that her sister planned to return to Laos the next morning to see her family. Her bags were already packed, she added.

Pieo said: "My sister was going to travel back to our home in Laos, as there is no work available at the moment in Bangkok. Then this accident happened.''

The body was sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination before the police will let the family hold the funeral for her.
