While using Youtube I have noticed that it's page loads seem to be a little on the slow side and at first I just put it down to their servers being under load, but I also realised that the slow page loads seemed to be consistant, so I then decided to see if it was my browser or something else. I had tested some other sites before with GTmetrix, so thought that it was time to see if a billion dollar Google site would be able to pass the test with flying colours. To find out what the result was you will just have to watch the video.
Youtube uses a system where a lot of javascript is loaded and then the content is fetched by the javascript when it is needed. This would probably have been a good system if the javascript did not then end up being so huge. There also seems to be a problem where the javascript is not cached for very long, so after a while it seems to all be loaded again when you switch to another page on Youtube. It looks to me as if the Youtube site has not been really developed much in recent years, but this could be because of the work that they are doing on the new Youtube studio which seems to be taking them a long while to complete, along with the backend changes that they have to make in order for it to be easier for them to block uploads that they do not like.
