Christine Read is an artist living and working in Lennox Head, near Byron Bay NSW. She is a member of the Lennox Arts Collective and has a large home studio in a rural setting.
Christine Read has been drawing, painting and exploring art practice since her adolescence. At high school she won prizes for her art and screen printed and sold textiles to the other students. On leaving school, art was not considered an option for a well paid career and so after obtaining a place in Medicine at Sydney University, she became a medical practitioner, a career which she practised for 41 years. Art practice and the enthusiasm to explore art never died, and over the years Christine regularly drew and painted and for three years in the late 90s, while working part time, attended Focus Art School in Mosman, Sydney NSW.
On moving from Sydney to Lennox Head in 2010, Christine decided to work part time and planned to transition to realise her dream of becoming a professional artist. She attended many workshops and entered art prizes. She won the Tyalgum Festival Art Prize in 2012 and has been a finalist and People’s Choice winner in a number of competitions. Her work is presented continuously at the Lennox arts Collective in Lennox Head, Northern NSW, but has also been shown at Breathing Colours Gallery, Balmain, at Agora Gallery, New York and in the Art Piece Gallery at Mullumbimby.
After fully retiring in 2016 Christine Read has focussed full time on her art and has become a successful teacher, art tour guide and collected artist.
She says about her art practice:
‘I love almost all aspects of art including drawing, painting and silk screening. I use a lot of colour and I love the sense of being 'present' in the work. I enjoy most subject matter, but most frequently paint landscapes, seascapes and still life. The beautiful scenery and plant life as well as the enormous skies that are present in the Northern Rivers where I live are potent inspirations. I also love smaller objects and flowers and am much inspired by artists like Margaret Olley, William Robinson, Luke Sciberras and the American, famous for his knitting, but also a wonderful artist, Kaffe Fassett. I also find painting and drawing to be something that takes me into another 'space' where I can absolutely enjoy creativity and contentment’.
‘I use both acrylic and oil paints, usually on canvas in an impressionist/ semi abstracted style but also create travel sketches using pen and wash on paper, especially when I travel. Each year I take a group or groups to France and England where we visit art galleries, museums and record our adventures in travel diaries and pen and wash sketches. The travel sketch class held annually is one of my most popular workshops. I continue to print textiles us
