This glacier in northern Italy is being described as a "terminal patient" as it is close to disappearing.

Glaciologists carrying out an annual survey are pictured on the Marmolada Glacier in the Trentino region of Italy.

The research carried out has predicted that the ice mass will completely disappear by 2050.

The drone operator told Newsflare: "[The] video was shot during the participatory glaciological campaign on the western front of Marmolada on 1 September 2019, for the annual survey of the glacial front.

"Between 2016 and 2019 the average setbacks are in the order of 25 metres per year: Marmolada is now a terminal patient.

"It is estimated that by 2050 the glacier will completely disappear.

"To carry out the surveys Mauro Varotto, professor at the Department of Historical, Geographical and Ancient Sciences of the University of Padua, as well as scientific coordinator of the Library and Museum of Geography of Padua."
