The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff admits the average American would question the need of having U.S. troops stationed in South Korea and Japan.
Watchers say General Mark A. Milley's comments, made on Sunday onboard a U.S. military aircraft en route to Japan, could be to emphasize the stabilizing force of the U.S. military in Northeast Asia, but also to pressure Seoul and Tokyo to contribute more to defense cost sharing.
Regarding South Korea's decision to terminate its intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan, Milley said the pact is critical for regional security.
Milley is scheduled to attend the South Korea-U.S. Security Consultative Meeting in Seoul on Friday along with the U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper.
