Lizzo Responds to 'Truth Hurts' Plagiarism Accusations.
The 31-year-old singer addressed the
accusations in a long Instagram post.
... as I've shared before, in 2017, I saw a meme that resonated with me ... I sang that line in a demo, and I later used the line in
'Truth Hurts.', Lizzo, via Instagram.
The men who now claim a piece of 'Truth Hurts' did not help me write any part of the song. They had nothing to do with the line or how I chose to sing it. , Lizzo, via Instagram.
In the statement, Lizzo goes on to say that
"There was no one in the room when I wrote
'Truth Hurts' except me, Ricky Reed, and my tears.
That song is my life , and its words are my truth.".
I later learned that a tweet inspired the meme. The creator of the tweet is the person I am sharing my success with ... not these men. Period, Lizzo, via Instagram.
The controversy arose when
producers Justin and Jeremiah Raisen
made the claim that they should share
the credit and proceeds for "Truth Hurts." .
Justin Raisen posted a video on
social media, comparing the line Lizzo
sings in "Truth Hurts" with the line Lizzo
sings in the demo she references, "Healthy." .
Attorneys for Lizzo filed
a lawsuit on Wednesday that
disputes the plagiarism claims
