4 Dead, 94 Hospitalized After Hot Tub Display Causes Disease Outbreak. The display was in the town of Fletcher, North Carolina, during a state fair that went from September 6-15. If not sanitized correctly, Legionella bacteria can develop easily in hot tubs. The deaths stemmed from Legionnaires' disease, a severe type of pneumonia. The state's department of health has received reports of over 133 cases so far. 94 people have been hospitalized. The bacteria can also be carried through the air, meaning people can contract it without touching a hot tub. Those with weak immune systems and the elderly are very susceptible to Legionnaires'. Pontiac fever has also been detected in eight of the victims
