00:00I'm going to take him out and have a look You take him out of there, he's going to run
00:19away.
00:20No he won't.
00:21He'll be alright.
00:22He needs to get out.
00:23You feel?
00:24Definitely wants to get out.
00:25Because what they tend to.
00:26He's going to leg it.
00:28What they tend to do, they can bolt.
00:42Hello mate.
00:48So obviously this is the long legged.
00:52This is the male.
00:53This is a, well, not very good.
00:58It's a Teginaria, or what used to be called a Teginaria and they're now called a Ratigena.
01:07Oh, yeah, they don't like human skin.
01:11Oh, there you go mate.
01:12It's alright.
01:13Look, you were trying to get out just a minute ago.
01:16So these guys are currently the fastest spider in the world.
01:22However, you know, you can always disagree with that, but let's say that it's the fastest
01:27spider that's been recorded.
01:31However, there are loads and loads of other candidates, I would say.
01:39But this guy, basically all he's doing is he's looking for a male, sorry, he's looking
01:43for a female.
01:45He's a male.
01:52And so the females tend to be a lot more stockier.
01:59Males tend to have the longer legs.
02:01The males are the ones that you find sort of skulking along the floor late summer.
02:09And once you understand the reason why they're doing that, it's because they're just out
02:12looking for females.
02:14Obviously, these guys are called house spiders, so it's not unusual to actually find them
02:18roaming the house.
02:20But you also would normally find them in the bath as well.
02:27Oh, maybe he is the one that was in the bath.
02:30He does look about the same size.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Well, down here you're obviously quite rural, so there's loads and loads of these around,
02:40especially this time of year.
02:42And so these guys will die fairly soon, you know, if they're lucky enough to find a female.
02:50Females can sort of live around about two and a half, three years, something like that.
02:56I've had like a couple which have lived for quite a while.
03:05So the best thing I can do for this guy is just relocate him outside.
03:11He's got a much better chance of finding a female outside than he actually has in the
03:16house.
03:18But, you know, you can see he's not stressed out, he's not bothered.
03:30So if you do see these guys, you can be quite intimidated by them because they can move
03:37very, very fast.
03:39However, they're really non-threatening.
03:42Really fast.
03:44They're really non-threatening.
03:45But, yeah.
03:48So this guy probably won't eat anymore.
03:50He's got quite a small abdomen anyway.
03:57So, yeah.
03:58And you can see on his pedipalps there.
04:02See if I can get a shot of that.
04:06His pedipalps or his feelers, if you want to call them that, on the front.
04:12Some people mistake them for another pair of legs.
04:15But they're enlarged and basically what they are is when they have their final molt, they
04:22turn into what's called boxing gloves and they develop hooks and this is what they load
04:27up the sperm onto which they insert into the female.
04:32So anyway guys, I just want to thank my girlfriend for the great camera work and don't forget
04:49to like and subscribe and I will see you very, very soon.
04:55Cheers guys.
