Fear Of Heights and Bridges? You're Not Alone

Stress and anxiety are a part of everyday life but how you deal with it can make all the difference between pleasantly enjoying the day and never wanting to leave your couch. In this episode of Beat The Fear, host Joe Leonardo provides tips for the over 40 million Americans who suffer from some form of anxiety on how to overcome their fears while he faces one of the things that he is most afraid of – Bridges!

Heights and Bridges are two things that make Joe’s heart race. He has an irrational fear that a bridge will just disappear as he is either walking or driving across it and he will plummet into a void. To help him face this fear, fellow comedian Tristan Miller has volunteered to join Joe in a walk across the Queensboro Bridge in New York City.

“If I ever have to drive over a bridge, I am tunnel vision, white knuckles, breathing exercises,” he admitted. “I feel like I’m claustrophobic, like I’m stuck on this and to escape it I’ll have to run, screaming somewhere else. I really want to face that fear today.”

Tristan and Joe set out walking up the ramp of the span and nervously observe how the bridge feels like it is shaking the higher up they go. They both admit to feeling closed in and nervous with cyclists and other pedestrians passing them by on the narrow walkway and traffic whizzing past just beyond a chain link fence a few feet away. They both get a little jittery and decide to pause at the highest point. While the view is amazing, it reminds them of how high they are and how far they still have to go.

Will they turn and run back or press on to cross over the East River? Does Joe have a technique for overcoming his fear? Watch to see how Joe faces this moment of truth with Tristan and if he learns something about himself and his ability to handle anxiety.
