The 300 Mile Rescue: From Kill Shelter to Salvation #RescueDogs

It’s over 300 miles from the Tracy’s Dogs facility outside San Antonio to the Brownsville and Palm Valley Animal shelters near the border with Mexico. Every month, Tracy drives her transport van on this long journey, never knowing exactly what she will be faced with when she arrives. Some dogs she has reviewed online and others she has been told of, but it is not until she steps through the shelter doors and walks the aisles of cages that she can truly make the decisions that will mean a healthier and happier life for the lucky few that will be rescued.

On this episode of A Dog’s Journey Home, Tracy first takes us to the Brownsville Texas Animal Shelter, over-run with too many dogs, many injured and unhealthy and facing sure euthanization. Tracy must make on the spot assessments of each dog, based on size, age, sex and health to determine which have the highest likelihood of being adopted. Often, she observes possible health issues and must request on the spot testing to make sure that whatever the dog has is treatable and will not put the other dogs at risk on the way home. While the discovery of a particularly adorable puppy will bring a smile to Tracy’s face, the effort of selection is emotionally grueling with so many in need and only limited space available in the van.

For some of these dogs, being selected by Tracy is the first step in their journey to new forever homes at an upcoming “Gotcha Day” in Buffalo, New York, but the road is neither straight nor smooth. “Every single dog here has been in an environment with dogs that are not vaccinated, that could be harboring something deadly,” she noted. “I’m worried about all of them but I am excited for all of them. They are really close to finding their forever home once they are with me. My hope and prayers for everybody is that they all get through this quarantine period, no one gets sick, and we end up finding everybody fabulous homes.”

Come and walk the shelters with Tracy as she makes her choices, loads up the van, and brings home a new group of dogs who will be lovingly cared for and given a second chance at a happy, healthy life. Stay tuned for the next episode where you will find out which of these precious pups will be selected to make the life changing trip to Buffalo.
