Legendary Boxer Pernell Whitaker Dead at 55 Pernell Whitaker was reportedly killed on July 14, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, after being hit by a car while walking at an intersection. Officials were called to the scene at 10:04 p.m. and Whitaker died of his injuries shortly after. It's not clear whether the driver that hit Whitaker was arrested, but police are still investigating the incident. Whitaker was well known for his boxing career from 1984 to 2001, having only lost four of his 40 matches. He won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics and was a four-weight world champion. He was also inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007. Whitaker is survived by his five children.
