Rate of Gray Whale Deaths Rises on the West Coast 58 have been found dead this year in
areas stretching all the way up to Alaska. The state
of Washington
alone has found
18 deceased
gray whales. Scientists say some of the dead whales may have died of starvation due to them being found malnourished. NOAA's Michael Milstein, via CNN Globally, West Coast gray whale numbers have risen in recent years and are now around 27,000. This has led researchers to believe there may be too little food to
sustain the whales, who weigh
up to 90,000 pounds. During the warmer seasons, grays go to
eat around arctic areas, which have
been affected by climate change. John Calambokidis, via CNN
