Giant manta ray 'flies' beside divers in waters off the Maldives
  • 5 years ago
This is the breathtaking moment a giant manta ray casually floated by a group of scuba divers swimming off the coast of the Maldives.

The majestic creature was captured during a dive on April 20, "flying" through the water past the watching divers off into the murky depths.

Diver Poosak Posayachinda said: ''It was a privilege to be so close to such a beautiful creature.''

Manta rays can grow up to seven metres long and are found in tropical and subtropical waters. However, the population of manta rays has been declining in recent years due to over-fishing.

They are currently considered vulnerable by the IUCN’s Red List of Endangered Species.
