The Federal Government Is Offering
$1,000 if You Adopt a Wild Horse The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has created an adoption incentive
program to deal with the growing population of wild horses across the west. Adopters are eligible to receive $500
within 60 days of adopting a wild horse,
and another $500 after titling the horse. People can adopt and maintain
up to four wild horses each year. There are over 82,000 wild horse
and burros in the West rangelands, which is more than triple the number
of animals the land is able to support. The program was made in the hopes of encouraging
adoption, as a large number of them are beginning
to starve due to lack of resources. The BLM usually cares for the horses by capturing
them, but they’re at max capacity. The agency removed 11,472 horses from the wild in 2018, and only 4,607 were adopted or sold.
