Ceramics A Fragile History - The Story of Clay ep.1
Ceramics are where art meets function - one of our oldest and most fundamental art forms, that sits at the centre of our homes.
The first film in this three-part series looks at a history of domestic pottery in Britain from Tudor times onwards, tracing the evolution of its different techniques and styles, and examining what our pots can tell us in intimate detail how preceding generations lived and saw themselves.

After watching the episode, I learned that majority of the artifacts are formed and made from clay. It's interesting to learn that ceramics is a type of art that can be permanent, whether that be a cup, bowl, vase, plate, etc., and it won't lose its shape.

This video has helped me further realize how widely and how long clay has been used over the years and how much it can be used to stretch, bend, and alter to create the piece you are desired to make. Honestly, this makes me want to go buy some clay to try and create my own piece

I learned that boned china was a great alternative to porcelain because it was translucent and delicate and also tough.

I learned that even though clay is the most commonly used material, It can take many forms representing a variety of different cultures and messages through time. The many differing techniques of clay building is so interesting to learn about because this material allows for so much creativity and individuality.

In this episode, I learned that most artifacts are formed from clay. Additionally, I learned that ceramics are a material that you can take and make permanent, like using clay to make a cup or a vase, and it will stay in shape. I also learned that clay is very cheap and is the most used material.

From this episode, I learned that pottery reflects so much about culture, time, and identity. Being able to see the steps of how raw clay is made into functional clay made me realize that art is so much more than most people realize it to be.
