Donald Trump Jr. has surprised some on social media by defending Chelsea Clinton after her comments were linked to the recent mass shooting at mosques in New Zealand.
"It's sickening to see people blame @ChelseaClinton for the NZ attacks because she spoke out against anti-Semitism," Trump Jr. tweeted. "We should all be condemning anti-Semitism & all forms of hate. Chelsea should be praised for speaking up. Anyone who doesn't understand this is part of the problem."
His post comes the morning after a young woman identified as a student reportedly confronted the former first daughter during a New York University vigil for victims of the massacre.
A video posted to social media shows the student emphatically telling Clinton in reference to the memorial: "This right here is the result of a massacre stoked by people like you and the words that you put out into the world. And I want you to know that and I want you to feel that deep inside. Forty-nine people died because of the rhetoric that you put out there."
The student was likely referring to Clinton's recent tweet supporting a message criticizing Rep. Ilhan Omar's controversial comment about Israel.
"We should expect all elected officials, regardless of party, and all public figures to not traffic in anti-Semitism," Clinton had tweeted at the time.
After being confronted by the student, Clinton remained calm and responded by saying, "I'm so sorry that you feel that way."
Trump's unexpected support of Clinton prompted social media to react, with one person writing: "I think Don's Twitter was hacked."
"Wow, Junior," someone else tweeted. "For once we agree on something. I should play the lottery today."
