Can Sick Dancer Return to Work And Avoid A Relapse?

Bailey Vincent, professional dancer and deaf culture advocate, is still recovering from a complicated triple surgery. She hoped it would address the cystic fibrosis symptoms that have been limiting her ability to lead and perform with her ballet group, Company360, but the road back has been rough.

In this episode, Bailey discusses how recovering from this surgery has been particularly slow and tedious so far, perhaps because this is the third time she has been operated on in the span of a month. “It has really been hard. You feel like you look different, and your vanity comes into play,” she reflects. “Behind the scenes I’m honestly feeling a lot worse than I am going to show.”

Despite her discomfort, life won’t slow down to make it easier. She is still taking care of her two girls, teaching her classes, choreographing a big show, and running her dance company. Her parents are concerned about her jumping back into a full schedule when she isn’t close to feeling 100% yet. “Listen to your body and listen to your parents,” her Dad advises. “We love you so much so please don’t push it.”

When Bailey gets to her first stop, a photo shoot for a new “ghost themed” dance routine, it’s exhausting. Bailey struggles to finish the shoot, not having as much energy as she is used to. She then moves on to her studio where she tries to dance and teach at her usual pace. Although she starts out pretty strong, after a while Bailey can barely move, and ends up having to teach mostly from the sidelines. After class, her sister Corey expresses concern and worry for her, and Bailey confesses how torn she feels. “It’s super frustrating as the Choreographer and Artistic Director to not be able to run rehearsal the way I want to which means giving 100%, dancing completely full out,” she says, ”It’s really difficult to feel like I’m holding back when I’m expecting my dancers to do the same for me.”

See how Bailey copes with the stressful decisions facing her... keep working and risk a relapse and another health decline ... or … listen to her sister and parents, take a break, and let herself heal?
