‘Maleficent 2’ Gets New Release Date Walt Disney Studios announced the release of their ‘Maleficent’ sequel has been pushed up to October 18, 2019. The movie has also been renamed ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.’ The fantasy adventure movie was previously slated to debut on May 29, 2020. Its original release date would have pitted it against the release of ‘Fast & Furious 9’ and a new "SpongeBob" movie. Now, it will have to compete with the second weekends of ‘Zombieland 2,’ ‘Gemini Man’ and ‘The Addams Family.’ Angelina Jolie is confirmed to reprise her role as Maleficent, and will be joined by costar Elle Fanning, who plays Aurora. The first ‘Maleficent’ opened in 2014 and grossed $758 million globally. The release change could have to do with the debut of Disney’s streaming service, Disney+, which is scheduled for the fall of 2019.
