Moon orders gov't to find ways to to narrow gap between N. Korea and U.S.

President Moon Jae-in ordered his top security officials to come up with ways... to bring North Korea and the U.S. closer together.
Seoul's government will push for three-way talks with Pyeongyang and Washington,... as a way to bring negotiations between the two sides back on track.

President Moon Jae-in is scrambling to find ways to bridge the gap between North Korea and the U.S.,... after their summit in Hanoi ended without an agreement.
Chairing his first National Security Council meeting in 9 months after the Singapore summit last year,... Moon said keeping both North Korea and the U.S. on the track of dialogue was his administration's top priority.
He also ordered his top security officials to come up with ways to help narrow the gap between leaders Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.
"I ask you to identify the differences in the North Korean and U.S. positions and come up with ways to narrow that gap. I believe the North Korea-U.S. negotiations will eventually reach an agreement,... but I ask you to work for an early resumption of the working-level talks between the two sides,... as we do not want to prolong the impasse in talks between the two."
South Korea's foreign minister Kang Kyung-hwa... promised to push for three-way talks with Pyeongyang and Wahington as a way to keep North Korea and the U.S. engaged in nuclear talks.
Seoul's top diplomat,... briefing the president during the meeting,... said such efforts will also include the so-called 1-point-5 track dialogue,... bringing in working-level officials and private experts from the two Koreas and the U.S.
Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, also noted during the meeting,... that it may take some time to get the denuclearization talks back on track,... saying that Pyeongyang is expected to go through a process of reviewing its strategy towards Washington and Seoul after evaluating the outcome of last week's summit.
The president also pointed that there is a possibility of progress in the future,... saying that the leaders had refrained from adding much tension,... even after failing to reach an agreement.
And the president emphasized the importance of future talks on shutting down the regime's Yeongbyeon nuclear facilities... deemed the backbone of Pyeongyang's nuclear program,... under the observation and inspection of the U.S.
With hopes of resuming his role of chief negotiator,... the president said he hopes the two countries continue their dialogue and the leaders Kim and Trump meet again in the near future to strike a deal they weren't able to reach this time.
