Election Commission questions MHA on ’84 riots ‘relief’

In view of next month's bypolls in three assembly seats in Delhi, the Election Commission has written to the home ministry seeking facts regarding its reported decision to grant Rs 5 lakh additional compensation for the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

On Thursday reported that home minister Rajnath Singh, in a decision taken early last week, approved additional Rs 5 lakh compensation to the next of kin of around 3,325 victims of the riots triggered by the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

"EC has sent a communication to the home ministry seeking facts about its alleged decision to award compensation to Sikh families affected by the 1984 riots. The model code of conduct is in force and the EC is competent to examine the decision. But it cannot go by media reports alone and has therefore asked the home ministry to report facts by Monday," a senior Commission official told on Friday.
