Badi Bahas: Why can't the Muslim Personal Law be changed?

What kind of India do we want? A strong India with a defined sense of nationhood bound together by common laws where the rights of all are equally guaranteed? A truly secular democracy where constitutional laws override repressive personal laws? An India where there is gender justice? A union where discriminatory laws that subjugate women and other denominations in the garb of religious practice have long been weeded out?
Most Indians would answer this question in the affirmative. But sadly ‘most’ doesn't mean ‘all’. India is still divided on the big question of adopting a common civil code or one law for one nation.
It was more than apparent today when the All India Muslim Personal Law Board held a news conference denouncing the law commission's move to call for a public consultation of adopting a common civil law.
