In a dramatic incident, a bait meant for a constable trapped the Station House Officer of the Sector 34 police station Inspector Rajesh Shukla, who was arrested by sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday evening, allegedly for taking a bribe of Rs 10, 000 from a parking contractor.

A head constable and a constable were also arrested.

A CBI officer said that they received a complaint from Lalit Joshi, a parking contractor in Sector 34, alleging that Shukla, through beat constable Dilbagh Singh and head constable Mukesh, both posted in the Sector 34 police station, had been extorting money from him, and had now demanded Rs 10,000.

“We were not able to verify the allegation against the head constable and the SHO. Only the allegation against the constable could be verified and a trap was laid. However, as the trap progressed, the SHO and the head constable also got involved and were arrested,” said Tarun Gauba, SP in CBI’s Anti-Corruption Bureau.

The constable and the head constable met Joshi in the parking lot in front of the Sector 34 gurdwara and Joshi handed them Rs 10,000.

The head constable and the constable then went to the police station and gave the money to the SHO.

After this, the SHO, the head constable and the constable got into a vehicle and drove to the Burail Police Post, which is under the Sector 34 police station. A CBI team followed them, arrested them and recovered the money from Shukla’s pocket. The hand wash of the SHO and the constable confirmed that they had handled the money.

A CBI official said Joshi told them that he had first paid the policemen in February and again on August 29, but they were verifying it. The CBI later carried out raids at the office and residences of the three accused.

Shukla is one of the eight inspectors in Chandigarh police who were next in line to become DSPs.

Chandigarh DIG A S Cheema said they had not received any official intimation from CBI. “As and when we get it, we will suspend them,” he said.
