Addressing the joint session of Parliament on June 9, President Pranab Mukherjee laid out the roadmap for the Narendra Modi government. He said that the greatest challenge for the Modi government is to end the curse of poverty and added that it should commit itself to 'poverty elimination' and not just to 'poverty alleviation'. It is worth examining the causes that contribute to the continuance of poverty and the possible interventions that can mitigate the problem.
