Mayawati govt foils Cong's Nyay Yatra, many held

LUCKNOW: The Congress activists led by UP Congress Committee (UPCC) president Rita Bahuguna Joshi failed to stage the much-hyped Nyay Yatra here after police barricaded the area and arrested them en-route on Monday.

Joshi termed the denial of permission for the march and subsequent police action as "manifestation of a pronounced fascist streak in the BSP regime" and said the Congress party will not allow the government to smother democracy .

The Congress had planned the march to protest against "growing lawlessness, atrocities against women and particularly the murder of former deputy CMO Dr YS Sachan, the prime accused in CMO Dr BP Singh murder case, in Lucknow jail last week". Citing "public inconvenience", the district administration on Sunday had refused permission for the march. Interpreting the move as a deliberate attempt to block a peaceful protest, Joshi had announced her decision to hold the march as scheduled.

Hundreds of party workers on Monday began to throng the venue since morning. Joshi challenged Maya's might by declaring that the Congress party would not abide by the restriction imposed by promulgation of Section 144. "This government", she told partymen, "shows scant respect for law, therefore it has no face to demand others to comply by rules and regulations."

Later, as protesters including CLP leader Pramod Tiwari, MP Annu Tandon, MLC Naseeb Pathan, Lucknow MLA Shyam Kishor Shukla, Ranjeet Singh Judev began to march towards the Hussainganj crossing, policemen deployed at the venue immediately slid barricading panels to block the passage.
