DIAMNIADIO, SENEGAL — Senegal is building a $2 billion futuristic city just 40 kilometers away from its capital, reports Quartz.

Senegal's President, Macky Sall is planning on building a 2 billion dollar futuristic city in the Diamniadio township called Diamniadio Lake City. This development project is part of his government's 'Plan for an Emerging Senegal'.

The new project will be built 40 kilometers from the capital city of Dakar. The Diamniadio project aims to promote economic growth."

The city will cover roughly 1,644 hectares. It will be divided into four sections containing various facilities including, a university for 30,000 students, an industrial park, and housing for roughly 350,000 people.

According to Senegalese officials, the project is being financed by investments from private companies through public-private partnerships. China has also pledged to invest roughly $105 million dollars in the second industrial phase of the project.

Renderings of Diamniadio Lake City by the architecture company in charge of the design show a shiny metropolis seemingly straight out of a sci-fi movie.

However, citizens of Diamniadio claim that the compensation the government is offering them for unofficially-owned lands is not enough.
