Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Wins Best Music Video at 2019 Grammys Childish Gambino beat out artists Joyner Lucas, The Carters, Tierra Whack and Janelle Monáe to win best music video for "This Is America." His music video debuted on May 5, 2018, and was an instant hit, amassing over 35 million views on YouTube in only two days. "This Is America" features a dark, pessimistic view of black life in the United States, with images of gun violence and references to slavery appearing throughout the video as Gambino dances in the foreground. The award was accepted by filmmaker Hiro Murai and dedicated to Gambino's father, Donald Glover Sr., who passed away in December of 2018. 35-year-old Gambino also took home best rap-sung performance for "This Is America." He previously won best traditional R&B performance for his single "Redbone" at the 2018 Grammys and has been nominated for a total of 12 Grammys in his career
