Bhagavad Gita - Chapter 2 - Stanza 21 & 22 | Artha | Bhagavad Gita Series
  • 5 years ago
Watch today’s video as we explain one of the most celebrated verses of Bhagavad Gita.

1 The twenty-first stanza is as follows;
Veda 'vinasam Nityam Ya Enam Ajam Avyayam
Katham Sa Purushah Partha Kam Ghatayati Hanti Kam ||21||
2 In this stanza Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that;
O Arjuna, how can someone who knows that the soul is indestructible, unborn, eternal and immutable, kill anyone or cause anyone to kill?
3 In the twenty-second stanza, Lord Krishna explained an essential truth of Atman in simple words. It is as follows;
Vasamsi Jirnani Yatha Vihaya Navani Grihnati Naro ‘Parani
Tatha Sharirani Vihaya Jirnany Anyani Samyati Navani Dehi ||22||
4 This stanza is regarded as one of the most popular verses of Srimad Bhagavad Gita. It can be roughly translated as;
Just like a person who discards the worn out clothes and puts on new apparels, in the same way, the soul leaves the old body and takes to the new one.
5 Here the main point is that the eternal essence (Atman) is separate from the human body which is why it gets attached to many of them. Once its purpose is outlived, it discards the body and subsequently inherits a new one.
