The Vaishnava devotees believe that glorifying Lord Vishnu through his devotional songs, singing his names “Hari” and “Narayana” is the purest demonstration of Bhakti.
Especially, Narayana is hailed in most of the Khandas of Vedas and Upanishads. The actual meaning of this sacred name is one who rests on waters of creation.
There are many legends in the Hindu sacred texts describing the auspiciousness of this name in divinity. One such tale mentioned in the Puranas narrates the story of Ajamila.
He was identified as a non-religious man who never performed any austerity or undertook his duties towards his family.
In a few of the adaptations, it is described that Ajamila was a very saintly person during his young age who later got involved in various immoral acts like gambling and drinking.
He was left alone on his deathbed and he kept crying out his son’s name, ‘Narayana’. His son never came to assist him and Ajamila drew his last breath.
The Yamadutas (messengers or assistants of Yama) arrived there to drag his soul to the Yamaloka and flung their noose towards Ajamila.
However, they were stopped by the Vishnudutas (embodies of Vishnu) as he had taken the name of Narayana not in remembrance or glorification of Lord but in passionate affection towards his child.
They said that although Ajamila has forgotten his moral duties, he has still achieved the Prayashchitta (repentance act) for his wrongdoings by pronouncing the four-syllable name of the Supreme God.
By the mercy of Lord Narayana, Ajamila was later taken to the Vaikuntha. The other adaptations state that Ajamila was brought to life after which he renounced the evil practices.
He then surrendered himself to the Supreme Lord by performing austerities and meditation. Later, he attained Moksha from the worldly life and went to Vaikuntha.
