1 Damayanti or Bhaimi is a character found in Hindu mythology, especially in a romantic tale mentioned in the Mahabharata.

2 She is one of the ideal heroines belonging to major Hindu epics and is celebrated for her wifely duties along with Sita and Savitri.

3 She was the beautiful princess of Vidarbha Kingdom, who married the king of the Nishadha Kingdom known by the name Nala.

4 It is believed that Damayanti was of such irresistible beauty and grace, that even the gods admired her.

5 But, Damayanti desired to marry King Nala, when she learns about his virtues and accomplishments from the Hamsa (a golden swan).

6 During her Swayamvara, the gods who attended it disguised as Nala. However, Damayanti chose Nala over everyone else and married him in spite of all obstacles.

7 Later, when Nala is banished to spend a period of exile in the wild forests, he abandons Damayanti in order to keep her safe.

8 Damayanti takes refuge in the palace of the Chedi, offering to serve the princess, Sudeshana, from where she is taken back to her kingdom.

9 Damayanti and Nala are reunited years later when she fakes her second Swayamvar to find him.

10 Damayanti’s encounter with the Hamsa and other epic scenes of Nala- Damayanti are portrayed artistically in exotic landscapes by great painters like Raja Ravi Varma.
