Upanayana is one of the traditional sanskaras (rites of passage) that related to initiation in Hinduism.

Even a girl child can take part in the traditional rites of Upanayana ceremony and is called Brahmavadini.

It is an elaborated ceremony that includes many rituals and customs that hold its own importance.

Yajnopavita or Upavita are the Sanskrit words for the thin sacred thread that is made up of three cotton strands.

The ceremony of wearing this Yajnopavita is most significant as it identifies that the child had entered into formal education and the wearer continues wearing across his chest thereafter.

This initiation ceremony concludes when the person worships the sacrificial fire and begs for alms, which symbolizes the dependence on others during the Brahmacharin period.

In ancient times, this ritual was for individual not more than eight years old, but in the 1st millennium CE, it was eligible to all ages.

Many scholars have compared this Hindu ritual with the Christian Baptism because of the similar purposes of the two rituals.

So basically, both the rituals are the examples of initiation. Wasn’t that fascinating! Let us know is you agree with us in the comment section below.
