1. In Indian mythologies, Vaitarna or Vaitarani is mentioned as a river that lies between the earth and the hellish regions.


2. Many Hindus refer to it as the river of the Naraka (hell) that one has to cross on the way to hell.

3. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata as a physical river that raised from the Vindhya mountains and later passed through Orissa as the present Baitarani River.

4. The scholars state that Vaitarna river is a frightening counter form of Ganga, created only for the sinful.

5. Various Hindu religious texts describe that the river does not have water, and is overspread with smoke and flames.

6. The souls with good deeds or good karma cross it through the path on which the Vaitarna’s flows.

7. Many believe that those who can’t cross the river have to wait for years till the servants of Yama drag him through the river.
