1. In South India, Urmila Nidra is a term used to refer to deep sleep by a person who cannot be woken easily.
2. It is said that, on the first night of the exile, Lord Lakshman was concerned that who will guard Ram and Sita while he sleeps.
3. To ease this tension Lakshman made a fixed resolution that he will not sleep until the exile ended.
4. As Lakshman stood guard over his brother's dwelling in the night-time, a majestic goddess manifested before him.
5. On Lakshman's inquiry, the goddess introduced herself as Nidra Devi (the Goddess of sleep and rest).
6. She warned Lakshman that not sleeping during the exile, which lasts for fourteen years is an act of rebellion against nature.
7. Since she was impressed by Lakshman's dedication, she agreed to make an exemption only if someone would readily bear the burden of Lakshmana's share of sleep for fourteen years.
8. This is when Lakshman requested his wife Urmila to help him by accepting this alternative solution, to which she agreed.
This spellbinding story is the sole reason to start the habit of calling people Urmila Nidra.
