Dwarapala is a Sanskrit word for the gatekeeper or door guardian of a sanctum.

In Hinduism, Dwarapala is often portrayed as either a warrior or frightening giant guarding outside the Gods abode.

These guards are armed with various weapons but mainly are portrayed with a mace.

The Hindu and Buddhist monuments hold elegantly carved and gorgeously decorated sculptures of 'Dwarpalaka' or the gatekeepers.

Jaya and Vijaya were the two famous gatekeepers of Lord Vishnu’s dwelling, known as Vaikuntha.

In pairs or in larger groups, other smaller structures were often placed on either side of the threshold to the shrine.

In some cases, only the fierce face or head of the guardian is represented as a Dwarapala.

In the Shaiva temples, a grand statue of Nandi bull is installed as door guardian at the entrance.
