The American Birthrate Is Below Replacement Level

The American Birthrate Is Below Replacement Level A new report has found that Americans are having
fewer children. A "total fertility rate" of 2,100 births per 1,000 women is required to replace the population without immigration. The current fertility rate is 1,765.5 per 1,000, or 16% below the replacement level. According to the CDC, 2017 had the biggest fertility drop in
recent history. The CDC did not provide an explanation for this drop, but researchers say it's due to a combination of factors. These factors include improved access to birth control, sex education and women delaying childbirth to focus on career. More and more women are also choosing to freeze their eggs and opt for in
vitro fertilization. Dr. John Rowe, Columbia University, via NBC News
